At just 18, D. Gukesh has etched his name in chess history by defeating China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest World Chess Champion. His journey, marked by sacrifices and relentless determination, is a testament to his drive and talent. From a seven-year-old prodigy to world champion, Gukesh’s rise has been extraordinary.

Gukesh’s family background

Gukesh’s family background

Gukesh is the world’s youngest teenager to claim the chess championship. His parents, Dr. Rajnikanth, an ENT surgeon, and Padma, a microbiologist, made significant sacrifices to support his dreams. Dr. Rajnikanth even took a break from his medical career in 2017-2018 to accompany Gukesh around the world, despite their modest budget. Padma became the sole breadwinner, ensuring financial stability during this period.

Gukesh’s childhood coach, Vishnu Prasanna, spoke about the immense sacrifices made by his parents, highlighting how they managed to stay apart for long periods, all for Gukesh’s future.

Milestones Achieved So Far

Gukesh’s career is dotted with remarkable achievements. At just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, he became the youngest Grandmaster in history in 2019. He continued his ascent by becoming the third-youngest player to join the elite 2700 Elo rating club and the youngest to surpass the 2750 rating mark. His notable wins include the Under-9 gold at the Asian School Championship and Under-12 gold at the World Youth Chess Championship. In 2022, he made history by defeating Magnus Carlsen, becoming the youngest player to beat the reigning world champion.

This year was a pinnacle in Gukesh’s career. He clinched the Candidates Tournament and played a crucial role in leading India to a gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. His crowning achievement in Singapore, where he became the World Chess Champion, capped off an extraordinary year.

Despite facing financial challenges, often relying on prize money and crowdfunding, Gukesh surpassed his idol, Vishwanathan Anand, to become India’s No. 1 chess player. Under Anand’s guidance at the Westbridge-Anand Chess Academy, Gukesh honed his skills, with Anand’s influence being a major factor in his success.

On Thursday, as the world watched, Gukesh not only honoured his parents’ sacrifices but also carried forward Anand’s legacy, marking a historic moment in chess.
