India clinched a thrilling 3-2 win on penalties against Oman after a 1-1 draw in the third-place playoff of the CAFA Nations Cup at the Hisor Central Stadium. The match, which went into extra time after a late equaliser, saw India hold their nerve in the shootout to secure a historic result.

Tight Contest in Regular Time

Oman drew first blood in the 55th minute when Yahmadi scored from a left-flank cross. India had earlier chances through Uvais’ header and a Lallianzuala Chhangte free-kick, but Oman‘s defence stood firm. India found their equaliser in the 80th minute when Udanta Singh flicked a long throw-in into the net, sending the game into extra time after a 1-1 stalemate in regular time.

Both teams pushed hard for a winner in the added period, with Oman pressing in the dying moments, but neither could find the back of the net. The deadlock meant the contest had to be decided on penalties.

Penalty Drama Seals Victory

And Lallianzuala Chhangte to go first for India. “He steps up… top right corner no problems. India 1-0 Oman in the shootout.”

It was Oman’s captain Al Saadi next, but Gurpreet Singh Sandhu came up big: “He goes to Sandhu’s right and the Indian captain saves! India 1-0 Oman in the shootout.”

As the tension grew, Bheke and Jithin scored calmly, while Oman faltered with one effort sailing high. Anwar Ali missed for India, but Sandhu’s second crucial save sealed the outcome. “Al Yahmadi steps up to take the decisive kick, and he hits it straight at Sandhu! India have taken the penalty shootout 3-2, they have taken third place!”

A Rare Victory Against Oman

The result was particularly significant for India, ranked 133rd in the FIFA standings, against Oman, placed 79th. Before this match, India had failed to beat Oman in their last 10 encounters, losing seven and drawing three.

India’s spirited campaign at the CAFA Nations Cup showed promise, with strong performances in the group stages despite their inability to convert dominance into goals. The third-place finish, however, will provide a morale boost for Igor Štimac’s men ahead of future international fixtures.
