India was officially ratified as the host for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030 at  the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday. This decision marks the first time India will host the Games since 2010 and presents itself as a major step in the country’s ambitions to become a global sporting hub. The event is scheduled for October 2030.

Delegates from 74 Commonwealth member nations ratified the bid, which had been previously recommended by the Commonwealth Sport’s Executive Board. India’s bid was favored over a rival proposal from Abuja, Nigeria.

Commonwealth games 2030: What did Dr Donald Rukare say?

The decision confirms that the world’s most populous nation will stage the landmark edition of the Games. Hailing India’s selection as the host nation, Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport referred to the moment of India’s selection as the start of a new golden era for commonwealth sport. 

“This is the start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport. After a ‘Games reset’ we head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape to welcome the 74 teams of the Commonwealth before setting our sights on Ahmedabad 2030 for a special Centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games,” he said.   

Commonwealth games 2030: Sports to be included in the 2030 edition

The 2030 Games will feature between 15 and 17 sports. The confirmed list includes core sports like Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball and Boxing. The process to finalise the remainder of the programme will start next month, and the full Centenary Games line-up will be announced next year. 

The sports under consideration include  Archery, Badminton, 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket T20, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon and Para Triathlon and Wrestling.  The host can also propose up to two new or traditional sports. 

Commonwealth games 2030: Main venue and logistics

The main venue will be the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera, which is currently under development. The massive complex features the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium and will also include an aquatics center, a football stadium, an indoor arenas for various sports and  An athletes’ village with a capacity for 3,000 athletes

Following the announcement of Ahmedabad as the official city for the upcoming games, the common wealth sports board also disclosed its plans to closely work with the Ahmedabad 2030 team to mark the inauguration of a unique edition of the games, one which mixes local culture with global appeal. 

Accepting the selection on India’s behalf, Dr, PT Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India expressed India’s hopes for the 2030 games.

“We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress,” She said.
