Meghalaya Tourism Marks Presence at 2nd Adventure Tourism Meet in Dehradun, Highlights Growth and Opportunities
In an interaction with FinancialExpress.com, Mr Philip F. Tariang, Assistant Director – Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, said that it was a wonderful opportunity for Meghalaya Tourism to be present at the Adventure Tourism Meet in Dehradun. “This is the second edition that we have been attending from the department and the first edition, of course, was held in Shillong itself,” he said.
Speaking about the key takeaways for him, he said, “One of them would definitely be the safety aspect of adventure tourism. In fact, that is very important since in Meghalaya also a lot of young people are getting involved in adventure-related activities. Meghalaya Tourism, in fact, is working on this extensively. The Ministry of Tourism has come up with the guidelines and we are looking forward to adopting them. The second aspect is the learnings from the different speakers. Yesterday when we were discussing among the various speakers the one aspect was astro tourism. In fact, I shared that also in my presentation where astro tourism which could be a great initiative for Meghalaya. The third thing was meeting different stakeholders with their varied backgrounds and understanding of the subject of adventure tourism. We got to learn so many things from them. All that could be shared with our young people in the state of Meghalaya where we can exchange ideas among ourselves.”
Meghalaya Tourism Gains Interest at ATM, Mr. Tariang Anticipates Future Collaborations and Visits
Mr Tariang also expressed his gratitude to the Indian Express Group for organizing the second edition of ATM. “We are looking forward to more such engagements,” he said, “In fact, the speakers have shown interest in visiting Meghalaya after seeing my presentation and video. They want to learn about what Meghalaya is doing and also probably share their understanding of what can be done in the future regarding tourism in Meghalaya.”
Meghalaya is a treasure trove of adventure activities, from rafting to caving, trekking, mountaineering and much more. “We are looking into the possibility of setting up a national caving institute. It is still in the initial stage. The other aspect is we are trying to engage with other organizations like, for example, the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) in Arunachal Pradesh. We’ll be sending out about 40-50 youths very soon, starting probably in August to September, for training. The government is looking into the possibility of where it can support the youth in terms of training and also by providing assistance for equipment,” said Mr Tariang.
