‘Constructive meetings’ held, but no agreement yet

The ministry said the delegation held “constructive meetings” with the US Government on various dimensions of the deal. The two sides exchanged views on possible contours of the deal and it was decided to continue the engagements with a view to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement, the statement read.

The ministry added that the businesses and investors in the US responded positively on the trade front and “reposed confidence in the India growth story and expressed their desire to intensify their business activities in India.”

India-US trade deal

India-US relations went south when President Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on Indian imports, 25% bases and 25% as penalty for purchasing Russian oil. Despite multiple negotiations between the two sides, no agreement could be arrived at as New Delhi held onto its stance of not compromising with agriculture and dairy sectors among others.

Agriculture and dairy are critical and sensitive sectors for India as they provide livelihood to a large section of people.
India and the US initiated talks for a just, balanced, and mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in March this year, aiming to complete the first stage of the Agreement by October-November 2025. However, the deal didn’t see the light of the day due to tussle over several issues.

The negotiations began again after Trump showed a change of tone, following the SCO summit meet between PM Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
