A US trade delegation currently visiting India has reportedly extended its stay for ongoing trade discussions, according to a report by The Economic Times. The team was originally scheduled to meet Indian officials on June 5–6, but will now stay in the country until Tuesday, June 10 to continue discussions.

As per a source-based report on The Economic Times tmost of the key issues could be finalised within a week. These individuals requested anonymity, as the details are not yet public.

Targeting early trade deal before July deadline

India and the United States are working towards a phased trade deal, with both sides aiming to reach an early agreement before the July 9 deadline. That is when the so-called “reciprocal tariffs” imposed by the Trump administration are set to take effect.

These tariffs — which could significantly impact Indian exports — are also facing legal challenges in the US. The potential deal is expected to help ease tensions and protect billions of dollars in trade.

The Economic Times reported that neither India’s Commerce Ministry nor the US Trade Representative’s office has responded to email requests for comment. However, Indian media had earlier reported the extended stay of the US team.

Indian and US commerce leaders express optimism over trade talks

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had described his May meeting in the US with his American counterpart, Howard Lutnick, as “constructive.” Earlier this month, Lutnick expressed his confidence in the ongoing talks, saying he is “very optimistic” about the prospects of a trade deal “in the not-too-distant future.”

India was one of the first countries to begin trade negotiations with the US in an effort to avoid the impact of the upcoming reciprocal tariffs. With the deadline approaching, the extended stay of the US team suggests both sides are committed to finding common ground.
