The Centre on Monday sought Parliament approval for net extra expenditure of Rs 78,673 crore for the current fiscal, out of a gross additional spending of Rs 2 trillion in the final batch of supplementary demand for grants.
Gross additional expenditure will also be matched by savings of the Ministries/Departments or by enhanced receipts/recoveries aggregated to Rs 1,21,625 crore.
The extra spending includes Rs 10,798 crore for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). In the Budget presented on Thursday for 2024-25, the government has enhanced the outlay on the job guarantee programme to Rs 86,000 crore from Rs 60,000 crore made in the Budget estimate for FY24. Some funds were provided in the first supplementary demand for grants in December.
The second batch of supplementary demands for grants for FY24, tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, also provided for additional spending of Rs 9,231 crore and Rs 3,000 crore towards food and fertiliser subsidies, respectively.
The Interim Budget for 2024-25 has pegged the government’s total expenditure in the current financial year at Rs 44.9 trillion, marginally lower than Rs 45 trillion factored in FY24BE.
