ITR Filing 2024 Due Date: Crores of taxpayers are hopeful that the Income Tax Department will extend the ITR filing deadline for the Assessment Year 2024-25 due to various reasons. One valid reason behind the demand to extend the income tax return filing due date is the severe technical glitches on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal, which have left taxpayers unable to file their returns despite several attempts.

What’s the ITR filing deadline for FY2023-24?

However, there has been no official word from the Income Tax Department regarding the extension of the ITR filing deadline. The tax department is constantly urging taxpayers through emails and messages to file their income tax returns before the deadline. As of now, the income tax return filing due date remains July 31, 2024.

“Do remember to file your ITR if you haven’t filed yet. The due date to file ITR for AY 2024-25 is 31st July, 2024,” the Income Tax Department posted on its social media X’s handle.

How many taxpayers have filed their income tax returns this year?

As of July 26, over 5 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed. This milestone was achieved a day earlier than the previous year, indicating a strong response from taxpayers. Last year, till July 31, 6.77 crore ITRs were filed. Tax experts expect this number to increase by about 10% this year based on trends observed in previous years. For the assessment year 2024-25, the number of income tax filers could reach up to 7.5 crore by July 31. With five days remaining before the ITR filing deadline, around 2.5 crore taxpayers are expected to file their returns by July 31, according to trends and last year’s data

Total ITRs filed for fiscal year 2022-23 (AY 2023-24)

The Income Tax Department reported a surge in the filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs), setting a new record with 8.18 crore ITRs filed for the assessment year 2023-2024 up to December 31, 2023, compared to 7.51 crore ITRs filed by the same date in 2022.


Reports of technical glitches on e-filing portal of Income Tax Department

Individual taxpayers and tax professionals complained to the income tax authorities about facing difficulties in accessing Form 26AS/AIS/TIS and discrepancy between figures in the statements. They also observed delayed update of responses in Tax Information Summary (TIS).

There have been technical glitches on the income tax e-filing portal, including continuous buffering, which have made it difficult to complete the form-filling process. Additionally, there have been instances of discrepancies between the pre-filled data in the income tax return and the salary, interest income, TDS, etc., as per Form 26AS.
