The Health Ministry on Sunday said that a suspected case of mpox has been reported from one of the designated hospitals to manage the disease in India. An investigation is currently underway to confirm the diagnosis.

According to the Ministry, the patient has a history of travel to one of the affected African countries.

“A young male patient, who recently travelled from a country currently experiencing Mpox (monkeypox) transmission, has been identified as a suspect case of Mpox. The patient has been isolated in a designated hospital and is currently stable,” the Ministry stated.

Samples from the patient are being tested to confirm the presence of Mpox. The case is being managed in line with established protocols, and contact tracing is ongoing to identify potential sources and assess the impact within the country, it added.

According to the Health Ministry, the development of this case is consistent with the earlier risk assessment conducted by the NCDC and there is no cause of any undue concern.

“The country is fully prepared to deal with such isolated travel related case and has robust measures in place to manage and mitigate any potential risk,” it said on Sunday.

Following the rise in mpox cases globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreaks a global emergency. On Thursday, Congo received its first batch of 100,000 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine, donated by the European Union through HERA, the EU’s health emergency agency.
