Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi, India’s National Capital, is currently grappling with high levels of air pollution. Air pollution is a growing environmental crisis, significantly affecting both public health and the climate. It is linked to respiratory diseases, heart problems, and premature deaths, while also contributing to global warming.
Air pollution presents a range of health risks that impact various organ systems. However, the most immediate effects are seen on the respiratory system, leading to increased respiratory infections and coughing.
“Long-term exposure can elevate the risk of developing conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and contribute to the overall risk of lung cancer. It can also worsen existing respiratory disorders. Additionally, air pollution is linked to higher risks of strokes and heart disease,” Dr. Mihir Gangakhedkar, Consultant Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital, Mulund told Financial Express.com.
‘Air Pollution affects male reproductive system’
Studies have shown that exposure to Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM 2.5), a common air pollutant in many developing countries, can negatively affect male reproductive health by reducing sperm count and quality, Dr. Gangakhedkar revealed.
“While the dangers of air pollution are widespread and affect both genders, certain male-dominated professions, such as manual labor in construction, which involve more outdoor exposure, may face higher risks. Therefore, a deeper understanding of how air pollution specifically impacts men is crucial,” he said.
In a 2024 review published in Antioxidants, researchers described the implications of exposure to air pollutants on male fertility parameters and sexual health. According to the researchers, prolonged exposure to pollutants may produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing sperm damage and affecting hormone regulation, leading to diminished fertility potential.
“…air pollution may negatively affect a range of male reproductive parameters, sexual health, and reproductive outcomes through various mechanisms,” the study stated.
