Prime Video’s exclusive web series, “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” has dropped its captivating 2-minute 17-second trailer, providing a sneak peek into the intriguing world of boarding school drama centred around the lives of young girls, specifically catering to the modern generation we call Gen Z.
While Hollywood has been a maestro in delivering compelling coming-of-age dramas for women, from the timeless “Little Women” (1994) to the more recent hits like “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Barbie” (2023), the Hindi film industry has seen fewer such heartwarming narratives. However, Nitya Mehra’s upcoming young-adult series seems poised to bridge this gap, promising an engaging storyline and a fresh perspective.
Directed by Nitya Mehra, the series boasts a stellar cast featuring Avantika Vandanapu, Aneet Padda, Dalai, Vidushi, Lhakyila, Afrah Sayed, and Akshita Sood in lead roles. The trailer kicks off by introducing a stern boarding school, its principal (played by Pooja Bhatt) proudly proclaiming the institution’s role in shaping society. However, the ensuing scenes swiftly unravel the irony, showcasing students indulging in mischievous activities behind the principal’s back.
The series explores the relationships among the lead characters, reminiscent of the dynamic in “Mean Girls.”. A small-town student becomes the target of mockery, labelled with “full kanya vidyalaya vibes.” Friendships are tested, hostel life is vividly portrayed, and hearts are shattered. As the characters navigate the complexities of relationships and academic pressures, some grapple with their sexual identity, while others confront bullying from entitled peers. In the midst of it all, the girl gang discovers their authentic voices, questioning the essence of growing up.
