Mumbai Police have arrested the primary suspect in the Saif Ali Khan attack case from Thane. According to ANI, the accused has admitted to committing the crime. Mumbai Police on Sunday morning informed that the accused is a Bangladeshi national who had altered his name from Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad to Bijoy Das after entering India. He is scheduled to be presented before a court for police remand later today.

The accused worked as a waiter at a restaurant, News agency ANI said citing Mumbai Police. A press briefing regarding the case will be held later today at the DCP Zone IX office at 9 am.

The breakthrough came after Mumbai Police launched a thorough manhunt, utilising CCTV footage that showed the attacker descending the stairs of Saif Ali Khan’s residence. Posters featuring his image were circulated throughout Mumbai and surrounding areas.

What happened?

The stabbing incident occurred during what seemed to be a burglary attempt. The 54-year-old actor, Saif Ali Khan, sustained multiple stab wounds, including injuries to his neck and near his spine, as he confronted the intruder in his home. He was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Fortunately, he is now recovering and is out of danger.

According to the complaint filed, the attacker had entered the bedroom of Saif’s younger son, Jehangir (Jeh), and was spotted by the house help. The ensuing commotion alerted other members of the household, including Saif and his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan. Saif confronted the intruder, leading to a scuffle in which he was injured. The Mumbai Police are scheduled to hold a press conference at 9 am on Sunday to provide further details about the arrest and the ongoing investigation.

Other arrests in the case

The search efforts also led to developments in other states. In Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, 31-year-old Aakash Kailash Kannojia was detained after being intercepted by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) on the Gyaneshwari Express train. Acting on a tip from Mumbai Police, the railway authorities had circulated the suspect’s photograph and location details.

On Saturday, another man was detained in Madhya Pradesh, sparking speculation about a possible connection to the stabbing case. However, authorities later clarified that the detention was unrelated to Saif Ali Khan’s case and was connected to a different matter.
