James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman, featuring David Corenswet as the iconic hero, is witnessing a steady surge at the Indian box office, leaving behind recent international titles like Brad Pitt’s F1 and Jurassic World: Rebirth. The film is nearing the Rs 20 crore milestone within just two days of release.
Industry tracker Sacnilk reported that Superman collected Rs 9.25 crore on Saturday, marking a significant 32.14% increase from its opening day earnings of Rs 7 crore across all languages. The cumulative domestic collection now stands at Rs 16.25 crore.
Despite facing stiff competition from multiple Bollywood releases like Rajkummar Rao’s Maalik, Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor’s Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, and Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, Superman has managed to maintain a strong foothold in theatres.
The film recorded an overall 32.50% occupancy in English-language screenings on Saturday across India. Here’s the detailed breakdown of show-wise turnout:
Morning Shows: 19.47%
Afternoon Shows: 33.31%
Evening Shows: 41.15%
Night Shows: 36.05%
In addition to English, Superman is also available in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu versions, along with screenings in premium formats such as IMAX and 3D.
Internationally too, the film is performing well. According to Deadline, the film is eyeing a global opening in excess of $210 million, signaling a strong start for the DC Universe’s new chapter under Gunn and producer Peter Safran.
While the Saturday growth cements a positive trend, industry watchers suggest Sunday’s collections will be critical in determining the film’s long-term momentum, especially in the Indian market where word-of-mouth and weekend turnout remain pivotal.
Directed by Gunn, Superman is a fresh beginning for the DC cinematic slate. The film reportedly carries a production budget of $225 million (approximately Rs 1931.75 crore), as per The Wall Street Journal. It has been produced under the banners of Troll Court Entertainment, DC Studios, and The Safran Company.
The ensemble cast includes Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, and Edi Gathegi, supporting Corenswet in his debut as Clark Kent.
