Nag Ashwin’s highly anticipated film “Kalki 2898 AD” is scheduled for release on June 27. This sci-fi movie features a stellar cast, including Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani.

With the premiere approaching, Nag Ashwin spoke with Film Companion about his experience directing legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. He admitted feeling “silly” when giving instructions to Amitabh Bachchan on the first day of shooting. When asked how he managed to direct such seasoned actors, Ashwin honestly replied, “I have no idea how to deal with Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. It always felt ridiculous to suggest anything about their acting. Particularly with Bachchan, since we began our journey with him. The first day of filming was with him, and I was at a loss. I hadn’t directed anything for about two or three years, and suddenly I had to guide Amitabh Bachchan. I thought, ‘What can I possibly say? Maybe, ‘Sir, a little slower?’ It felt absurd.”

Despite their legendary status, both Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan were “open and receptive” throughout the production. Ashwin noted, “What I realized is that they want to be part of the process and be directed. They don’t want to assume they know everything. Especially for veterans like Bachchan sir and Kamal sir, they were eager to contribute ideas and valued direction. They didn’t want to rely on their established personas but instead desired fresh input.”

On Monday, the film’s trailer was released, creating a buzz online. Reflecting on his directorial style, Ashwin said, “There are some aspects I am lenient with and others I take considerable time on. My background as an editor influences this. Sometimes people think we need multiple takes, but I know we don’t—it’s going to be quick. So, perhaps that’s the kind of director I am.”
