Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino – the spiritual successor to his acclaimed 2007 film Life In A Metro, opened in cinemas on July 4, 2025, with a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan. Despite the buzz and nostalgia, the film’s first-day box office numbers reflect a cautious audience response.
Metro In Dino box office collection day 1
Metro In Dino earned an estimated Rs 3.35 crore on its opening day. These are early figures from Friday and the film is expected to surpass Rs 3.5 crore once final numbers are in, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
The film registered an average occupancy rate of 17.99% across India. Morning shows saw a low turnout at 8.64%, which improved slightly in the afternoon to 14.24%. The evening shows matched the day’s overall average at 17.99%, while night shows saw the highest footfall with a 31.09% occupancy.
Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru emerged as the top-performing cities on the opening day. Meanwhile, advance bookings had indicated a collection in the range of Rs 50-60 lakh, which aligns with the film’s overall performance on Friday.
The film’s performance was strongest in metro cities, with Delhi NCR and Mumbai leading in the number of shows and occupancy. Bengaluru also posted impressive numbers, especially for night shows.
Metro In Dino’s opening day collection has already surpassed its predecessor, Life In A Metro, which debuted with Rs 87 lakh in 2007 and went on to earn Rs 24.31 crore worldwide. However, the new film’s start is considered below average for a multi-starrer of this scale, especially given the competition from other major releases like Kajol’s Maa, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, Brad Pitt’s F1 and Scarlett Johansson’s Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Metro In Dino: Budget and economics
Metro In Dino has been mounted on a total budget of Rs 100 crore, which includes Rs 85 crore for production and Rs 15 crore allocated to advertising and promotions. Originally planned on a Rs 65 crore budget, the overall cost escalated due to multiple reshoots and delays during production.
Before its theatrical release, the film had already recovered a significant portion of its investment through non-theatrical deals, earning around Rs 70 crore from the sale of digital, music and satellite rights. To break even, the film now needs to gross approximately Rs 75 crore worldwide.
Despite recovering a significant portion of its investment through non-theatrical avenues, Metro In Dino still needs a robust box office run to break even. The film’s theatrical share must reach at least Rs 30 crore globally to cover the remaining costs.
With a modest opening and stiff competition at the box office, Metro In Dino faces an uphill battle to recoup its hefty investment. The coming weekend will be crucial in determining whether Basu’s latest urban tale can find its audience and replicate the cult status of Life In A Metro.
