Apple TV+’s acclaimed psychological drama Severance topped the list at this year’s Emmy Awards, receiving an impressive 27 nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. The series, which deals with the lives of office workers who undergo a memory-severing procedure, has become a favourite among both audiences and critics because of its visual pattern and narrative.
Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, attributed the show’s uniqueness. “It’s distinctive in every way in terms of its storytelling, tone and directing”, as quoted by Reuters. Lead Actor Adam Scott, who is nominated for Best Actor, stated that the team had not expected such a strong acceptance. “We thought it might be too weird,” he mentioned, adding that the acknowledgement has been “an incredible feeling.”
HBO’s The Penguin is also among the top nominees, a dark DC Comics adaptation featuring Colin Farrell, which has collected 24 nominations, including the Best Limited Series. Next on the coveted list are The White Lotus and The Studio, both of which have received 23 nominations each.
First-time nominees in the Comedy category
In the comedy section, Hacks and The Bear, along with newcomers like Abbott Elementary and Nobody Wants This, are on the list. The Studio starring Seth Rogen in the role of a Hollywood executive has equalled The Bear’s record of 23 nominations in a single season.
Seasoned actors like Harrison Ford and Noah Wyle have received nominations for The Shrinking and The Pitt. For the first time, Ford has been nominated at the age of 83. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard are recognised for their special appearances on The Studio.
Despite the sheer competition, HPO has topped across the platforms with 142 nominations in total, Disney has received 137, and Netflix and Apple have garnered 120 and 81.
