Actor and activist Emma Watson, most popular for her Harry Potter role as Hermione Granger, recently did something very un-Hermione. She has been banned from driving for six months after she was caught speeding at 38mph in a 30mph zone on Banbury Road, while driving her Audi S3.
The incident was captured by a traffic enforcement camera. Her Audi S3 had also been towed months earlier for being illegally parked. At the time of the incident, Watson already had nine penalty points on her driving record for previous offences.
Watson was charged by post and entered a guilty plea on March 3. The sentence, after the hearing, took place on Wednesday at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court, which she did not attend in person. The hearing lasted just five minutes.
Representing Watson in court, her solicitor Mr. Wilson stated, “She fully understands her position and will accept her punishment.”
Along with the driving ban, the court imposed three more points on her licence. She was ordered to pay a total of £1,044 (Rs 1.2 lakh approx), which included a £650 (Rs 74,000 approx) fine, £120 (Rs 13,000 approx) in court costs and a £264 (Rs 30,000 approx) victim surcharge.
The court banned Watson from driving for six months, given that her points now exceed the threshold that typically results in disqualification under UK law.
On her career front, Watson is currently pursuing a master’s program in creative writing at the University of Oxford from 2023. In 2023, she launched a sustainable gin label along with her brother.
On the work front, Watson rose to prominence in 2001 as a child actor in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She then starred in all eight instalments. She has also appeared in movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, and her most recent, Little Women in 2019, directed by Greta Gerwig.
