Emergency BO Collection Day 3: Kangana Ranaut’s latest historical biographical drama, ‘Emergency’, saw a much-needed rise in footfall and box office collections on Sunday after a slow start during its first two days in theatres. Directed, co-produced, and headlined by Kangana herself, the film has surpassed the Rs 10 crore mark in the domestic market, though it still faces a steep climb to reach its break-even point.
According to Screen, IE, the film earned Rs 4.35 crore in India on Sunday, a 20.83% increase from Saturday’s Rs 3.6 crore collection. With an opening day figure of just Rs 2.5 crore, the improved performance on Sunday brought the film’s total domestic nett earnings to Rs 10.45 crore, providing a slight reprieve for Kangana’s solo directorial debut.
The movie recorded an overall occupancy rate of 18.96% in the Hindi market on Sunday. While morning shows began with a modest 8.23% occupancy, the numbers picked up significantly in the afternoon to 20.47%, peaked at 30.57% for evening shows, and then dropped to 16.58% during night screenings.
Despite this growth, Emergency faces an uphill battle. With an estimated budget of Rs 60 crore, the film has only managed to collect Rs 10 crore over its opening weekend. Mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike have further dampened its prospects for commercial success.
While the Sunday collection is an improvement compared to Kangana’s recent box office flops like Thalaivii (Rs 1.85 crore), Dhaakad (Rs 98 lakh), and Tejas (Rs 1.2 crore), it still falls short of her moderately performing titles like Judgementall Hai Kya (Rs 8 crore), Panga (Rs 6.60 crore), and Chandramukhi 2 (Rs 8 crore).
The political biographical thriller explores the life of India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Starring Kangana as the late leader, the film focuses on the final years of her time in office, highlighting key events like the Emergency and Operation Bluestar.
