Punjabi star-singer Diljit Dosanjh has announced the global release of his much-anticipated film Punjab 95, which is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The film, directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies, will hit cinemas worldwide on February 7, with no cuts. However, the movie will not be released in India for the time being, following delays caused by issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

On Friday evening, Diljit shared the official trailer of the film, in which he portrays Khalra, a man who fought for justice during Punjab’s turbulent militancy period. The movie sheds light on Khalra’s relentless investigation into human rights violations and the disappearances of Sikhs, focusing on his pursuit of truth amid a dark chapter in India’s history. “Panjab ’95’ releases in Cinemas Internationally only on 7th February. P.S. Full Movie, No Cuts #ChallengetheDarkness,” Diljit wrote in his post.

Punjab 95 also stars Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky, known for his role in Kohraa. The film was initially slated to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 but was removed from the line-up without any official explanation from the organizers.

The film is inspired by the real-life events surrounding Khalra’s investigation into the mass cremations of unidentified bodies in Punjab between 1984 and 1994. In 1995, Khalra disappeared mysteriously, and a decade later, four police officers were arrested for his alleged abduction and murder. In 2007, the Punjab and Haryana High Court extended their initial seven-year sentence to life imprisonment.

Fans of Diljit and the film industry are eagerly awaiting the release of Punjab 95, which promises to bring the powerful story of Khalra’s courage and conviction to the global stage.
