After receiving rave reviews, director Rahul Sadasivan’s Dies Irae, starring Pranav Mohanlal, is breaking box office records. The third biggest Malayalam opener has entered top 10 highest-grossing Malayalam films of 2025, according to OTT Play The film is now nearing Rs 50 crore mark worldwide, inching towards another victory, according to reports. At the Indian box office, the horror-thriller has amassed Rs 23 crore approx. Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra remains the highest grossing Malayalam film of 2025, followed by L2: Empuraan and Thudarum on second and third spot, respectively.
The Malayalam horror is director Sadasivan’s third horror movie after he impressed the audiences with finely crafted movies like Bhoothakalam and Bramayugam. His latest Diés Iraé, starring Pranav Mohanlal, Sushmitha Bhat, and Gibin Gopinath, released on October 31 and is turning out to be a treat for horror lovers.
Dies Irae’s box office journey
The film lived up to the positive reviews it received, and collected Rs 4.7 crore on its first day in India, according to trade website Sacnilk.
Over the weekend, occupancy rates improved to 21.28% with the earnings jumping to Rs 5.7 crore on Saturday. The film improved its performance further on Sunday as it reached Rs 6.35 crore.
However, Monday saw a dip in numbers as India net stood at Rs 3 crore. Tuesday was no better, as the film could garner Rs 2.61 crore on Day 5. With a total domestic collections of Rs 22.71 crore, the film continues to maintain steady earnings.
Story and reviews
Die Irae tells the story of Rohan, (Pranav Mohanlal), an architect who lives alone. Things take a dramatic turn after he learns of his schoolmate Kani’s (Sushmitha Bhat) death after which a series of supernatural events unfold.
The film has received thumbs up from social media users as some of them called it the finest horror-thriller from Malayalam cinema. The film’s lead actor Pranav Mohanlal, who’s the son of legendary Malayalam actor Mohanlal, has also been praised for his subtle yet powerful performance.
