How did Chhorii end?
The plot of Chhorii jumps straight into the action. The first scene shows a pregnant woman being chased through sugarcane fields at night. In the shocking moment, she was ultimately forced to cut her own womb, though the reason behind her identity remains unclear. The story then shifts to the city, where we meet Sakshi (Bharuccha), a compassionate and idealistic social worker who’s eight months pregnant. She lives with her husband Hemant (Saurabh Goyal), whose poor financial decisions have left them in serious trouble. After getting beaten up over an unpaid loan, Hemant decides that their only option is to flee the city. Their driver suggests they hide out in his remote village.
In the village
Chhorii carries echoes of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Signs (2002), starring Mel Gibson, not through alien invasions in cornfields but in the way it turns vast, quiet landscapes and tall crops into sources of unease. The situation is that when Sakshi and Hemant arrive in the village (after a long, unsettling drive through sugarcane fields), you feel it in your bones: something is deeply off here. Devi, the driver’s wife (portrayed to chilling perfection by Mita Vashisht), welcomes them with hospitality laced with something darker. Traditional and deeply religious, she’s clearly concealing something beneath her polite demeanor.
Hemant takes off soon after, supposedly to take care of things, leaving Sakshi alone in this increasingly creepy surrounding. And if the isolation wasn’t enough, Sakshi begins noticing three strange children. They appeared out of nowhere and whispered things. They also play games that no child should know. Devi warns Sakshi to stay away from them, but in horror movies, warnings are only the beginning of something much worse—and, of course, no one listens until it’s too late.
And know the woman running through the sugarcane fields? She is called Rani (Pallavi Ajay), and she is apparently good. She is the wife of Rajbir (Devi’s elder son). Devi helpfully ensured Sakshi that Rani had a stillbirth and her womb had to be removed to save her life. Sure, Jan.
When Hemant finally returns, Sakshi, panicked, begs him to take her away. Their escape is ambushed by Devi. The couple is forcibly rendered unconscious, and a ritual is performed on Sakshi, after which she is tied to a bed and asked to live alone for three days. Devi claims that this is to purify the ghost of her sister-in-law Suneni.
Who is Suneni?
This is where Chhorii’s plot reveals its true horror: Suneni was once pregnant with a baby girl. Her in-laws (Devi’s family) demanded that she get an abortion. He denied. While trying to escape, she accidentally killed her husband. As punishment, the family burnt him alive. She gave birth to a child during the fire, but the child was thrown into a well as part of a harvest ritual.
Burnt and broken, Suneni jumped after her child. Devi’s three young sons, who were in love with Suneni, also jumped in to try to save her. They all died. They all became ghosts. After this, Devi’s family could no longer produce sons nor preserve their lineage.
The three haunting days
Sakshi, left alone, had to endure horrific scenes. She feels Suneni’s pain again. The three ghost children tease, protect, and harass her. He shows the brutal truth: how the village hides its crimes behind customs. The ending of the film Chhorii begins to take shape when Suneni’s ghost forces Sakshi to repeat her fate: to cut herself and her unborn child.
But Sakshi, brave, pleads. She offers a new path: to tell Suneni’s story to the world so that this cycle can end. Finally the ghost listened and relented. Three days had passed by.
The climax
Morning comes. Devi, Hemant, and the driver return, hoping to find a broken Sakshi. But she is standing tall. She refuses to leave without telling the truth. Then comes the final twist.
Hemant is actually Rajbir, Devi’s son and Rani’s husband. Yes, this is the same Rajbir who had killed his two previous wives to hide the secret of the village. They spared the queen only because she had sworn to remain silent. But as Rajbir raises weapons to attack Sakshi, Rani kills him, Devi, and the driver with a knife.
Sakshi walks away from the cursed house through the sugarcane fields. He is now guided by ghost children. Rani joins him, eventually freeing herself.
