The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, one of the most prestigious honours in global cinema, celebrates excellence in filmmaking across categories like directing, acting, and technical achievements. Often regarded as a strong indicator for the Oscars, the BAFTAs hold significant weight in the awards season, shaping industry conversations and recognising outstanding contributions to film. The 78th BAFTA saw Conclave and The Brutalist emerge as the biggest winners of the night, while Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez continued its awards season dominance, winning Best Film Not in the English Language. Indian film All We Imagine As Light, directed by Payal Kapadia, lost in this category for the third time this year, having previously missed out at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.
Edward Berger’s political thriller Conclave won Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Outstanding British Film. Meanwhile, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist took home four awards, including Best Director and Best Actor for Adrien Brody.
Zoe Saldaña won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Emilia Pérez, while Mikey Madison (Anora) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) secured Best Actress and Best Actor in a Supporting Role, respectively.
Despite receiving international acclaim and making history as only the seventh Indian film nominated in this BAFTA category, All We Imagine As Light could not secure a win. The film, which follows the lives of two Malayali nurses in Mumbai, had previously won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
