Christopher Nolan‘s desperately awaited The Odyssey, packing a star cast like no other, is a whole year away, and it’s already breaking records. For the first time in history, tickets to a movie have gone live a year ahead of the film’s debut. And yet, IMAX seats across limited special movie theatres in the United States are already SOLD OUT!
Just over two hours ago, the official IMAX account sounded the alarm on bookings for the first IMAX 70mm screenings of the Greek epic’s Hollywood iteration, slated to hit big screens on July 17, 2026, being open. A series of major theatres all through New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Phoenix, and more US locations, in addition to some Canada, UK and Czech Republic shows, were listed as part of the unlocked list for the Christopher Nolan movie’s advance bookings.
Despite the shows being scheduled for “one year from now,” pandemonium broke out on social media as internet users immediately complained about certain showtimes already beings sold out within minutes (even seconds in some cases, as users would have you believe it) of the announcement. Inevitable chaos ensued, with many notably hailing the Oppenheimer director’s relevance in this time and age.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey advance tickets sold out immediately after going on sale — Internet crashes out
“I’m not bummed the Odyssey tickets are already sold a year in advance,” a user furiously chanted thrice on X, trying to come to terms with what had just befallen them. Another person noted that it was a race against time defined by the classic “every man for themselves” scenario as cinephiles fought tooth and nail to grab any ticket online regardless of how uncomfortable their sitting experience may turn out to be eventually.
A different user exclaimed, “Odyssey tickets sold out in 20 mins.” Someone else wrote, “The first showing listed for The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm is sold out at AMC Lincoln Square, a year in advance…” A third person noticed, “Seven minutes after THE ODYSSEY IMAX 70mm tickets went on sale — for July *2026* — and Cineplex’s Vaughan location is nearly sold out the entire opening weekend.”

A user found the light at the end of the tunnel, claiming that the whole experience poetically aligned with the Greek epic saga. “Christopher Nolan making The Odyssey an immersive experience by making us wait an entire year after buying our tickets like we are Odysseus spending 10 years trying to find his son,” they commented online.
Violent memes broke out on the Internet, as many lost their calm after losing out tickets to the first screenings. “Me to the people who got The Odyssey tickets in IMAX 70MM after they sold out in 30 seconds,” someone fumed, sharing a video of what seems like an endlessly violent shootout.

Watching the film on the IMAX 70 mm screen is undoubtedly bound to be an unmatched spectacle, especially since the film is being shot entirely on IMAX cameras — another first for a commercial silver screen feature. With a net budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is set to soar above all other movies of Nolan’s career as his most expensive project yet.
Matt Damon takes the lead as the titular hero in Nolan’s take on the classic Greek myth. A-listers Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron and Mia Goth will also join the epic ride as Odysseus embarks on a perilous journey home riddled with deathly mythical obstacles.
In India, a select few IMAX halls showed the very-first teaser-trailer for The Odyssey before rolling out James Gunn‘s two-hour-long Superman.
