Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a timeless classic. Not just us Indians, even the British second this. An iconic statue featuring SRK and Kajol from the film will be erected at Leicester Square in London, months ahead of its 30th release anniversary on October 20, 2025. With this, it will become the first ever Indian film to have received this honour.

The statue will join the Scenes in the Square movie trail in Leicester Square, as announced by the Heart of London Business Alliance announced on Wednesday.

Announcing this news, trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on X, “This landmark tribute, featuring #ShahRukhKhan and #Kajol in an unforgettable pose from the film, marks the beginning of the #30YearsOfDDLJ celebrations.”

Released in 1995, DDLJ marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra, under the production banner of his father Yash Chopra’s Yash Raj Films. This film was mostly shot in the UK, chronicling the love story of Raj and Simran, two young non-resident Indians. They meet and fall in love on their month-long vacation through Europe with their friends. It was at Leicester Square where Raj and Simran first cross paths in the film.

According to the official press release, this new statue will be placed along the eastern terrace, outside the Odeon cinema in honour of the scene from the film. Some of the other iconic London locations that appeared in the film are Horseguards Avenue, Hyde Park, Tower Bridge and King’s Cross Station.

Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive, Heart of London Business Alliance, said that it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to add “titans of international cinema” Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to their trail.

“The statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood and a celebration of London’s rich diversity. We’re in no doubt it will attract fans from all around the world to Leicester Square, the home of film and entertainment,” Williams said in a statement.

“We’re thrilled to be the first Indian film to be represented in Scenes in the Square. It also marks 30 years of DDLJ, a film that has spread love and joy globally and shows the cultural impact it has had in UK,” said Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films.

He further added, “We are honoured that our superstars and our film are being recognised on the world stage alongside the Hollywood elite, from Gene Kelly to Laurel & Hardy to Harry Potter. This statue will be a great way to express the international appeal of Indian movies and build bridges amongst communities through cinema.”
