Fluoride is a crucial mineral that is often found naturally in water, soil, and air. According to experts, fluoride is added to toothpaste and water supplies because it can help prevent cavities and various other oral complications.
According to Dr. Neha Chhabra, Co-Founder of Bentodent, in general, fluoride is a mineral found naturally in water and several foods that helps prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel. It also minimizes the amount of acid produced by bacteria.
“Due to poor oral hygiene, high sugar intake from drinks or sodas, and starchy foods, plaque can develop on the teeth, weakening the enamel and making the teeth more sensitive, creating cavities. People switch to fluoride-based toothpaste to combat these dental concerns. However, it is important to consult with a dentist before using fluoride toothpaste,” Dr. Chhabra told Financial Express.com.
The dentist can help in identifying an individual’s oral health concerns and will recommend fluoride toothpaste usage or precautions, as well as product recommendations, she said.
“With so many alternatives accessible today, it can be tough to determine which is the best option. As excessive fluoride use can also lead to dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis, a dentist can provide expert advice on the appropriate amount of fluoride to provide dental protection with minimal negative health effects,” she said.
Furthermore, people of all ages should take care of their oral health by getting enough fluoride in their diet naturally, drinking more water, eating fluoridated foods like avocados, peaches, lettuce, and radishes, brushing and mouth washing twice a day, and even visiting a dentist for regular checkups to prevent tooth problems, she added.
