Vitamin D is an extremely important nutrient and it plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. A deficiency of vitamin D can lead to loss of bone density, which can contribute to osteoporosis and fractures (broken bones).

In children, vitamin D can lead to rickets in which bones become soft and bend. In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia. Osteomalacia causes weak bones, bone pain, and muscle weakness.

Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to hair loss. Several studies suggest vitamin D deficiency has been linked to alopecia, also known as spot baldness and several other health conditions.

Studies low vitamin D levels may be associated with a poor hair growth cycle which can result in slow regrowth that could aggravate hair thinning and the appearance of bald spots.

According to experts, increasing vitamin D levels can stimulate new and old hair follicles. Available studies have shown that taking a vitamin D supplement for three months can decrease hair fall and stimulate hair regrowth from the follicles.

A study revealed that a 45-year-old female diagnosed with diffuse hair loss was treated with vitamin D supplements for three months. She received 1000 IU of vitamin D every day and in the first month of her medication, the patient experienced decreased amounts of hair fall. At the end of the three-month observation period, the researchers had noted restoration of healthy scalp and active hair regrowth, the study found.

It is important to highlight on average, the hair growth cycle can take a long time to complete. Moreover, always consult a doctor before taking any kind of supplements. Moreover, it is better to get a proper body check-up and blood work to understand if there are any underlying causes of hair fall.
