Nagaland Medical College: Nagaland’s first medical college has been inaugurated by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday, October 14, 2023. The inauguration of the Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) took place in the capital city of Kohima. The CM of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio also attended the event.

Deputy CM TR Zeliang, State Health and Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak, Senior officials of the Nagaland government, members of civil societies and others were also present at the event.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also posted pictures of the newly inaugurated medical college on X, formerly Twitter.

The newly inaugurated medical college is affiliated with Nagaland University and offers 100 MBBS seats out of which 85 are for students from Nagaland and the rest 15 seats are for students from across the country. 

After the induction programme that was conducted last month,  85 students from the state and six from across the country were admitted to the NIMSR MBBS programme.

During the addressal of the event the union health minister said that NIMSR is more than just a medical college and that it is a research institute that is fulfilling the purpose of imparting medical education  along with addressing the health issues of the Naga people. 

In emphasizing the central government’s dedication to enhancing medical education in Nagaland, the minister revealed a substantial increase in MBBS seats, soaring from 64,000 to 160,000 within a span of nine years. Moreover, he urged students and stakeholders not to confine their research endeavors within national boundaries but to explore international opportunities.

The minister also disclosed the initiation of foreign language courses within medical education institutes, aiming to equip students with an advantage for securing employment abroad. Additionally, he underscored the government’s comprehensive strategy to fortify medical, nursing, and pharmacy education, emphasizing the holistic advancement and broadening of the healthcare sector.

Highlighting the government’s objective of ensuring accessible healthcare, the minister specifically drew attention to the expansion of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which offer medicines at subsidized rates. This emphasis on affordability reflects the government’s commitment to providing cost-effective medical solutions to the populace, a crucial aspect of their healthcare policy.
