The University of Sheffield, UK, is inviting applications for its MPlan(UG) course in Urban Studies and Planning, scheduled to commence in September 2024, as per the official announcement from the university.
This four-year integrated master’s programme equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue careers in planning and related fields. The University’s MPlan stands as the sole triple-accredited programme of its kind in the UK, blending core skills with an interdisciplinary intellectual approach.
From industry recognition to practical experience, the integrated master’s in urban studies and planning prepares students to anticipate and influence the future of the built environment.
Accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) for housing modules, the MPlan is the only UK course with triple professional accreditation.
In addition, the MPlan has recently been accredited by the Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI). This means that graduates from India can also take advantage of the professional recognition offered by an accredited degree, which counts towards Membership of their national planning institute.
Covering core knowledge, skills, and critical issues like climate change and urban inequalities, the four-year course provides students with a practical foundation and a comprehensive intellectual understanding of urbanism, spatial change, and planning.
Along with work experience in a local planning office or private sector planning consultancy, students are encouraged to pursue specialist interests through optional modules, field trips, site visits, and the option to study abroad in Europe for a semester or at one of the university’s partner institutions for a year.
Key reasons to pursue this course include the dedicated employability team, which supports students in securing placements, arranges guest lectures by alumni, and collaborates with industry to ensure students acquire in-demand skills. The course also features professional skills modules throughout all four years, covering project management, teamwork, negotiation, and facilitating reflection on developed skills for effective articulation in job interviews.
The department ranks as the UK’s top accredited planning school for research and impact, with over 95% of its research deemed world-leading or internationally excellent in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.
For the 2024-25 academic year, the annual tuition fee for overseas students is £22,680.
