The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the subject-wise exam dates for the UGC NET December 2025 session. The exams will begin on December 31 and will continue till January 7.

The UGC NET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to determine eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as Assistant Professor, and admission to PhD programmes. The December 2025 exam will be held for more than 80 subjects, and all papers will be conducted online.

Exam schedule and shift timings 

The detailed subject-wise schedule has been published on the official website. The exam will be held in two shifts each day – the morning shift from 9 am to 12 noon and the afternoon shift from 3 pm to 6 pm.

The exam city intimation slip for UGC NET December 2025 will be released on the NTA website at least 10 days before the exam date. Candidates can check updates on the official website, ugcnet.nta.ac.in.

UGC NET is conducted twice a year, in June and December, by the NTA on behalf of the UGC. The June 2025 session was held from June 18 to 21, and the results were declared on July 21.

Number of registered candidates 

For the June 2025 exam, over 10.19 lakh candidates had registered, and around 7.52 lakh appeared for the test. Based on their performance and cut-off marks, 5,269 candidates qualified for both JRF and Assistant Professor, 54,885 qualified for Assistant Professor and PhD admission, and 1,28,179 candidates qualified for PhD admission only.

Candidates who secure the minimum required marks as per their subject and category are considered qualified. Those who qualify for JRF can apply for funded research positions and are also eligible for Assistant Professor posts.

Candidates who qualify for Assistant Professor can apply for teaching jobs in colleges and universities across India, while those in the PhD-only category can seek admission to doctoral programmes as per the rules of individual institutions.
