The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the updated NEET UG seat matrix for the 2025–26 academic year. As of October 10, India has a total of 1,26,600 MBBS seats. This figure includes both the renewal of existing seats and newly approved ones.
For 2025–26, the NMC approved 9,075 new MBBS seats across the country, excluding AIIMS and JIPMER. Throughout the year, the seat matrix has been revised several times due to changes in the approval status of seats in different medical colleges. Candidates are advised to review the updated matrix carefully and follow the revised schedule.
NEET UG 2025: Changes in state-wise seat allocation
In Andhra Pradesh, Santhiram Medical College in Nandyal increased its intake from 150 to 250 MBBS seats. Anna Gowri Medical College and Hospital has been approved to start with 150 seats. Other states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, have also added more seats, giving medical aspirants additional opportunities.
However, Delhi’s Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research saw a reduction of 150 seats in the updated matrix.
Seat matrix revisions explained
In September, the NMC added 6,850 seats but also removed over 1,056 seats due to pending court cases, approval delays, renewals, and the inclusion of supernumerary seats.
About ten days later, another revision was made: 7,375 new seats were sanctioned, while 456 seats were removed. This followed the Cabinet’s approval of 10,000 MBBS seats under Phase 3 of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) expansion.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has extended the choice-filling deadline for NEET UG Round 3 counselling to October 13, 2025. Candidates who have not submitted their preferences should visit the official website – mcc.nic.in. The seat allotment results for Round 3 are expected by October 15.
