It is believed that the field of design education is one of the most emerging domains in today’s dynamic market, as companies need creative designers at every front. Keeping in mind, there seems to be a growing demand for design courses among aspiring candidates and job aspirants. Here is a simple guide for aspiring candidates, about a few of the design colleges in Delhi-NCR with course details, eligibility criteria and fee structure. 

Indian Institute of Art and Design

The Indian Institute of Art and Design offers a number of Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) courses in design. Reportedly, the institute offers UG courses, including a two year Foundation course in design, a four-year Fashion Design course, four-year Communication Design, four-year Interior Architecture and Design, four-year Fashion Business Management, and four-year Fashion Communication course. Also, the institute offers a two-year PG course in Fashion Business Management. 

Eligibility criteria and fee details:
For UG courses, applicants need a minimum of 50% aggregate in 10+2 or equivalent in any stream (Science, Commerce, Humanities, or Arts). Candidates, awaiting Grade 12 results, can also apply from CBSE, ISC, State, IB, or equivalent boards. For PG courses, graduates from any stream or discipline from a recognized institute can apply. Final year students or those awaiting results may also apply.

While UG design programmes require applicants to take the iDAT (IIAD Design Aptitude Test) exam, iDAT assesses creative, visual ability, cultural awareness, and logical thinking through a combination of visual tasks, writing tasks, one-word answers, and multiple-choice questions. For Fashion Business Management (UG and PG), applicants undergo two screenings: iMAT exam and a personal interview. iMAT evaluates language, logical reasoning, and creative thinking through multiple-choice questions and writing tasks, followed by a personal interview.

For UG courses, the annual fee ranges between  Rs 5-5.2 lakh while for PG courses, it is around Rs 4.83 lakh. 

National Institute of Fashion Technology

The National Institute of Fashion Technology offers several courses in design education. The institute’s four-year long UG courses include Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) in Fashion Design, B.Des. in Leather Design, B.Des. in Accessory Design, B.Des. in Textile Design, B.Des. in Knitwear Design, B.Des. in Fashion Communication, and B.FTech. in Apparel Production. Furthermore, the two-year long PG courses include a Master of Design, Master of Fashion Management, and Master of Fashion Technology.

Eligibility criteria and fee details:

For its US courses, the annual fee ranges between Rs 3.26- 3.59 lakh while for PG courses, the annual fee is roughly Rs 3.10 lakh. To take admissions in the UG or PG course of NIFT, the interested candidates need to appear in NIFT Entrance Examination after completion of their grade 12 or graduation respectively.

Pearl Academy West Campus, Delhi

The Pearl Academy offers more than 35 bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in Fashion Design, including a four-year Bachelor of Design, a short term professional programme, and a certification programme. Apart from these, the institute also offers a two-year Master of Design in the Rs 6.23 lakh bracket.

Eligibility criteria and fee details:

For its bachelor’s degree programme, the institution charges an annual fee of Rs 7.47 lakh while for 11-month professional courses, the total fee is Rs 4.2 lakh. The institution offers master’s degree programmes in the Rs 6.23 lakh bracket.

To take admission into Pearl Academy courses, students need to appear in an entrance exam, which includes a Written Exam, Personal Interview, and Portfolio Showcase.

Amity of School of Fashion Technology

The Amity School of Fashion Technology offers programmes, such as a four-year Bachelor of Design, a two year Master of Design, a two-year Master of Arts, and a two-year MBA. Apart from these courses, the institute also offers a Ph.D programme in design. 

Eligibility criteria and fees:

For Bachelor of Design, the annual fee is Rs 1.52 lakh while for Master of Design and Master of Arts, the annual fee is Rs 1.3 lakh. For the MBA programme, MBA institute charges Rs 3.4 lakh per year while for Ph.D  programme, it is around one lakh rupees per year. To enroll students in all of its courses, the institute conducts a creative test and a personal interview. 

The Design Village

The Design Village offers several courses in design education, including B.Des. in Space and Interior Design, B.Des. in Communication and Graphic Design, B.Des. in Product Design, B.Des. in Transportation and Mobility Design, B.Des. in Interaction and UX Design, M.Des. in Fashion and Textile Design, M.Des. in Space and Interior Design and M.Des. in Communication and Graphic Design.

Eligibility criteria and fee details:

For a four-year Bachelor of Design, the total fee is Rs 24 lakh while for a two-year M.Des. in Communication and Graphic Design, the total fee is Rs 12.5 lakh. To enroll in Design Village’s courses, students need to appear in the TDV Design entrance, with a minimum 50% marks in their grade 12 and graduation.
