Meghalaya’s Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, announced on Saturday that starting next year, the state’s school education board will conduct two Class 10th examinations annually.
The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will implement this change by holding two Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in 2025, according to Sangma’s statement to PTI. The state cabinet approved the amendment to the Meghalaya Board of School Education Regulation for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination 2011 on Friday.
This initiative aims to provide a second opportunity for students who do not pass the board exam on their first attempt.
“Beginning in 2025, MBOSE will organize two SSLC board exams each year. The first exam will be held in February or early March, and a second chance will be given to students who fail one or more subjects, allowing them to retake the exam within one to two months, likely in May,” Sangma explained.
The education minister highlighted that this decision aligns with the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and is intended to minimize the time lost between exam attempts.
Additionally, the cabinet has decided to eliminate the optional paper or ‘best of five papers’ system starting from the 2026-2027 academic year. This means that all students will be required to pass all six subjects in the board examination from that academic year onward.
The cabinet also approved the Service Rules for the Meghalaya Public School Service Rules, the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules, 2024, and the Farmers Empowerment Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
