The Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has officially designated G. Thilakavathi IPS, the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu, as the ‘Student Ombuds’ effective from November 7, 2023. This appointment underscores the institute’s strong commitment to upholding a secure campus environment while safeguarding the well-being of its students, according to an official release.

In her capacity as student ombuds, Thilakavathi will be responsible for overseeing and addressing various issues pertaining to student grievances, safety and disciplinary concerns. She will play a pivotal role in cultivating and nurturing an inclusive atmosphere within the campus, ensuring that students enjoy a supportive setting for both their academic pursuits and personal development, the release mentioned.

“IIT Madras has always prioritised the welfare and safety of our students, and Thilakavathi’s appointment as student ombuds underscores our commitment to enhancing the overall experience of our students while providing them with a trusted authority to turn to in times of need,” V. Kamakoti, director, IIT Madras, said. 

As the Student Ombuds, she will engage closely with students, providing them with essential support. Simultaneously, the institute administration will maintain a strong connection with the Student Ombuds, ensuring that student grievances are resolved in a timely and efficient manner.

“She will collaborate closely with the institute to ensure that students’ concerns are not only heard but also addressed promptly and impartially. Our commitment remains unwavering in the quest to foster a secure and nurturing campus environment that empowers students to thrive in both their academic and personal endeavours,” Kamakoti added.
