In a state-level meeting of Ekal Nari Sangathan, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu underscored the government’s plans for the welfare of underprivileged sections in society. The Chief Minister shared plans to expand the social security pension scheme by adding 40,000 new beneficiaries in the upcoming financial year, with an additional expenditure of Rs 70 crore, as per the official announcement.

Presently, the scheme allocates approximately Rs. 1,260 crore, benefiting 7,84,000 individuals, including the elderly, widows, single women, disabled individuals and leprosy patients. Chief Minister Sukhu introduced the “Mukhya Mantri Sukh-Shiksha Yojana,” an initiative to support the education of children of widows until they reach the age of 27, with income criteria below one lakh rupees annually.

The Mukhya Mantri Sukh-Shiksha Yojana encompasses various higher education courses, such as medical, engineering, NITs, IIMs, IITs, nursing, graduation and post-graduation. It includes a provision of Rs 1,000 per month deposited in recurring deposit accounts until eligible children turn 18. The State Government will also cover the annual health insurance premium for eligible women, incurring an additional expenditure of approximately Rs. 41 crore.

Furthermore, the state government will provide financial support to widows for building their homes, ensuring essential amenities like electricity and water. Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Education of Persons with Disabilities in Kandaghat, Solan district. This centre will offer comprehensive facilities, including playgrounds and residential accommodations, catering to individuals with disabilities until the age of 27. Financial assistance for rented accommodation will be extended to eligible Divyang children without a place to live.

MLA Harish Janartha, Deputy Commissioner Shimla Anupam Kashyap and representatives of the Ekal Nari Sangathan were present during the announcement of these transformative welfare measures.
