Goa is working towards achieving a 100% literacy rate by December 19, 2025, coinciding with Goa Liberation Day, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Saturday. Currently, the state’s literacy rate stands at 88.7% as per the 2011 census.
Speaking at a webinar on the Swayampurna Goa initiative, Sawant emphasised the importance of engaging local communities and panchayats in this effort. “Every individual must contribute to ensuring no one remains illiterate,” he said, adding that while Kerala claims to have achieved full literacy, “practically, it doesn’t appear so.” Goa, he assured, would strive for true universal literacy.
The Chief Minister also highlighted efforts to extend the reach of Central schemes such as the Kisan Credit Card, Kisan Soil Card, and Kisan Vima Card to all farmers in the state. He urged panchayats to display boards indicating the number of farmers in their jurisdictions.
Praising the efforts of “Swayampurna Mitras,” government-appointed officers under a state scheme, Sawant credited them with ensuring the successful implementation of Central government schemes across Goa.
