The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued guidelines for students with Type-1 diabetes who will be taking the 2024 board exams. These guidelines aim to provide necessary accommodations to support these students in managing their medical condition during the examination process.

CBSE’s decision to release these guidelines comes in recognition of the challenges faced by students with Type-1 diabetes during exams. The board has extended several facilities to ensure that these students can effectively manage their medical needs while appearing for their exams.

According to the guidelines, students with Type-1 diabetes are allowed to carry specific items with them into the examination hall. These items include sugar tablets, chocolates, candies, fruits like bananas, apples, oranges, snack items like sandwiches, high-protein diets, prescribed medicines, a 500ml water bottle, glucometer, glucose testing strips, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) machine, Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) machine, and/or insulin pumps.

To avail of these facilities, students are required to follow certain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Firstly, they must inform the board about their Type-1 diabetes condition during the registration or submission of the List of Candidates (LOC). Secondly, they or their school/parents must approach the examination center at least a day before the start of the examination to inform the Center Superintendent about the items they will be carrying. Additionally, students must arrive at the examination center at least 45 minutes before the exam begins and ensure they are seated in the exam hall by 9:45 am.

Furthermore, students are required to upload certain documents on the CBSE portal to avail of these facilities. These include recommendations from medical specialists for using CGM/FGM/insulin pumps during the examinations and a parent’s undertaking ensuring that these devices will not be used as communication devices that may disrupt the integrity of the exams.
