The Assam government has announced its intention to take legal action against schools found guilty of irregularities in providing school uniforms and mid-day meals to students. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed during a session in the Assam Assembly that police cases will be filed against those responsible for these discrepancies.

Addressing the Assembly during the question hour, Sarma highlighted the prevalence of alleged anomalies across the state in the distribution of school uniforms and mid-day meals. He emphasised that action will be initiated post the Lok Sabha elections, citing instances where the quality of uniforms varied significantly between different districts.

Acknowledging the diverse standards observed in school uniforms, Sarma urged MLAs to evaluate the quality of uniforms in schools within their constituencies and report any substandard findings. He stressed the necessity of addressing these issues to ensure the education system’s integrity, vowing to establish public committees for scrutiny and improvement post the elections.

Sarma declared that FIRs will be lodged against those found culpable of irregularities, emphasising the government’s commitment to rectify the situation and ensure the provision of high-quality uniforms and hygienic meals to students.

The matter was brought to attention by AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam in response to a query from BJP legislator Dharmeswar Konwar regarding inconsistencies in the implementation of the mid-day meal scheme.
