Boeing has laid off up to 180 employees from its Engineering Technology Center in Bengaluru as part of a global workforce reduction, according to a PTI report. The US aircraft manufacturer, which employs around 7,000 people in India, has been facing challenges worldwide.

Last year, Boeing announced a 10% global workforce reduction. The recent layoffs in India, which took place in the December quarter of 2024, were part of this initiative. While the company has not issued an official statement, sources indicate that the job cuts were strategic, with minimal impact on customers and government operations.

Some roles were eliminated, but new positions were also created to maintain service, safety, and quality standards.

Boeing’s India Engineering & Technology Center (BIETC) in Bengaluru and Chennai handles advanced aerospace work. The company’s Bengaluru campus is one of its largest global investments outside the US, with Boeing sourcing approximately $1.25 billion annually from over 300 Indian suppliers.

Meanwhile, German luxury carmaker Audi recently announced plans to cut 7,500 jobs in Germany by 2029 to improve profitability.

So far in 2024, 89 tech companies have laid off 23,382 employees, while 549 companies sacked 152,472 employees in 2024. The highest layoffs were recorded in 2023, with 1,193 companies dismissing 264,220 employees.
