Shreyasi Singh, the celebrated sportsperson turned politician, officially joined Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinet on Thursday. The move marks a major step in her transition from international shooting competitions to state politics. Shreyasi won the Bihar Legislative Assembly election in 2020 and was re-elected in 2025 from Jamui. This time, she defeated RJD candidate Shamshad Alam by more than 54,000 votes.
Shreyasi, after taking the oath as a Bihar cabinet minister, said, “I express gratitude towards the people of Jamui and my family members. The Cabinet, which took oath today, comprises both youth and experienced leaders.”
In the Bihar assembly election of 2025, the NDA returned to power having recorded 202 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. This also marks the emergence of the BJP as the single-largest party with 89 seats, following a close competition from its ally Janata Dal (United) with 85 seats.
Who is Shreyasi Singh?
Shreyasi Singh, at the age of 29, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2020. She contested and won the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from Jamui (Vidhan Sabha constituency), defeating the RJD’s Vijay Prakash with a margin of over 41,000 votes.
Along with this, Shreaysi is a decorated sportsperson who had a distinguished career in shooting. She comes from a family where her grandfather and father served in the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) as Presidents. Notably, she also has a political background where her father, the late Union minister Digvijay Singh, and her mother, former MP Putul Kumari, both served as politicians.
Shreyasi Singh won India’s 12th Gold medal in the Women’s Double Trap event at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Before this, Shreyasi also won a silver at the 2017 Commonwealth Championships in Brisbane. She received the Arjuna Award in 2018 for her outstanding contributions to Indian sports.
Prior to this, she also participated at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2014 and secured a Silver medal. She was also part of the 2013 Trap Shooting World Cup held in Acapulco, Mexico.
Rajnath Singh praises Shreyasi
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who campaigned for Shreyasi Singh in the recent Bihar elections, praised her abilities. He mentioned that she had already secured a “gold” for India and would now bring a “gold” of development to Jamui. He added that she would become the “voice of Jamui and Bihar.”
