Businessman Samir Modi, the founder and managing director of Modicare and son of Godfrey Phillips India chairperson Bina Modi, was arrested on Thursday at Delhi airport after rape charges were registered against him, police officials said.

According to investigators, an FIR was lodged on September 10 at the New Friends Colony police station. Acting on the complaint of a woman, police alleged that Modi sexually assaulted her earlier and subsequently threatened her. On his return to Delhi from abroad, he was detained and taken into custody from the airport.

The complainant accused Modi of repeatedly raping, threatening and deceiving her since 2019. She alleged that Modi initially approached her under the pretext of offering career opportunities in the fashion and lifestyle sector and later forced himself on her at his New Friends Colony residence in December 2019.

The woman further claimed that Modi subjected her to ongoing harassment, assault and blackmail, making false promises of marriage despite being aware that he was already married. According to PTI, the complainant said she faced persistent threats to her life and that of her family if she spoke out and that Modi used his influence to intimidate and silence her through false assurances, police officials stated.

Who is Samir Modi?

The arrest marks a new chapter in the long-running turbulence surrounding the Modi business family. Samir, the youngest son of late industrialist KK Modi and a cousin of fugitive ex-IPL chief Lalit Modi, has frequently been in the spotlight for corporate and personal controversies.

Last August, he was ousted from the board of tobacco major Godfrey Phillips India after an acrimonious clash with his mother Bina Modi and other directors. The family feud burst into the open in May this year, when Samir alleged that he was assaulted during a board meeting by his mother’s personal security officer. He accused her and senior directors of conspiring against him, though Delhi Police later cleared Bina Modi and director Lalit Bhasin of wrongdoing, charging only the security officer.

Corporate legal battles

Samir has also fought protracted legal battles tied to his corporate disputes. Just months ago, in May 2025, a Delhi court acquitted him in a defamation case filed by three independent directors of Godfrey Phillips — Lalit Bhasin, Nirmala Bagri, and Atul Kumar Gupta — who accused him of tarnishing their reputations amid the boardroom tussle.
