The All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has suspended the head of its Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department, Dr AK Bisoi and removed him as the head of the CTVS department, after women nursing staff levelled harassment allegations against him.

The complaint was first raised with the AIIMS director, and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The institute has now suspended the professor, till the inquiry against him gets completed.

What is the case?

Reports say the AIIMS Nurses Union had filed a complaint with the AIIMS Director and the PMO, accusing the professor of workplace intimidation and sexual harassment. The complaint stated that Bisoi repeatedly used “vulgar, unprofessional and derogatory language” to target female staff.

“In view of the complaint dated 30.09.2025 received from a female nursing officer of the Department of CTVS against Dr. A.K. Bisoi, Professor and HoD of CTVS, and the representations in that regard received from the AIIMS Nurses Union dated 30/09/2025, 04/10/2025, and 07/10/2025, the Director has assigned the charge of Head of the Dept of CTVS to Dr V. Devagourou, Professor of CTVS, with immediate effect, till further orders,” an AIIMS memorandum dated October 11 said, quoted Indian Express.

In their complaint sent to PMO on October 9, the AIIMS Nurses Union said it had “by our communications dated 30.09.2025 and 04.10. 2025 addressed to the Director AllMS – New Delhi had brought to his kind notice regarding the severe and disturbing conduct of Dr A.K. Bisoi… for the use of abusive, vulgar and sexist language against one of the members who happens to be a woman Nursing Staff.”

The nurses alleged that Bisoi has been repeatedly using “vulgar, unprofessional, and derogatory language targeting the female nursing staff and the nursing fraternity at large”.

Doctor ‘intimated, threatened’ nurses

The complaint further said that Dr AK Bisoi openly intimidated nurses and threatened to teach a lesson to all those who had complained against him. He even warned to remove them from their postings if they complaint. “It is deeply shameful that female employees are being harassed, humiliated, and intimidated in the aforesaid manner,” the complaint said, stated IE.

Reports said that Bisoi was previously suspended in March 2009 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for his unlawful acts. Ten years later in 2019, he was reportedly involved in “acts of harassment towards female nurses and objected to the Namaste Campaign initiated by the Infection Control Team”.

Although no action was taken against him despite a probe, the complaint stated. As of now, the AIIMS administration has made senior professor Dr V Devagourou the head of CTVS department to with immediate effect.

Who is Dr AK Bisoi?

An experience cardiac surgeon, Dr AK Bisoi has been serving at AIIMS for over three decades now. He has done research and significant work in the area of cardiac surgery.

A report mentioned he has done over 32,000 procedures and was also part of the research in developing sustainable healthcare models for underprivileged patients. He has also been awarded with the prestigious Dr B.C. Roy National Award – for excellence in medical teaching and contribution to healthcare.
