The newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs in Delhi are set to convene soon to elect their legislative party leader, who will be sworn in as the Chief Minister on February 20. Ashish Sood, a veteran leader with strong affiliations to both the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has surfaced as one of the top contenders for the position following the party’s impressive showing in the recent assembly elections.

Sood, who has been a part of the BJP for several years, is no stranger to Delhi’s political landscape. He secured a decisive victory in the Janakpuri constituency, defeating AAP’s Rajesh Rishi by a margin of almost 19,000 votes. Known for his organisational skills, Sood has held various significant roles within the party, including serving as a councillor, Leader of the House in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), and more recently, as the party’s Goa in-charge and co-incharge for Jammu and Kashmir.

A key figure in the Delhi BJP, Sood has been actively involved in the party’s growth, having served as the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), later becoming its national vice president.

His contributions to the party’s organisational efforts are evident, having worked as secretary of Delhi BJP in 2008 and later as its general secretary. His strategic influence within the party has solidified his reputation as a trusted figure in the BJP’s hierarchy.

Sood’s victory in Janakpuri is further underscored by his strong grassroots connections, a trait that has helped him maintain a steady presence in Delhi’s political sphere. He enjoys significant backing from influential BJP leaders, including party president JP Nadda and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, along with support from the RSS.

With his extensive experience, organisational acumen, and ties to the Sangh Parivar, Ashish Sood stands out as a key contender for the Delhi Chief Minister position, especially as the BJP seeks to strengthen its position in the national capital. His leadership within the party and his ability to manage complex political affairs make him a natural choice for those within the BJP looking to consolidate the party’s foothold in Delhi.
