The Karnataka government is committed to ensuring that products made in the state feature labels in Kannada language, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced during the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations on Friday.
He noted that currently, products produced in both the private and public sectors primarily display their labels in English. Moving forward, the government aims to include Kannada translations on packaging, the CM stated at an event honoring 69 recipients of the annual Rajyotsava awards.
Siddaramaiah emphasised the importance of fostering an environment where Kannada is learned and used daily, asserting that this will honour the language. He also revealed plans to establish a Kannada museum at the historic Attara Kacheri, the old district commissioner’s office in Mysuru, which is no longer in use following the relocation of administrative functions.
He highlighted the need for non-Kannada speakers to learn the language as part of promoting Kannada’s growth. While referencing his past role as president of the Kannada Kavalu Samiti in 1983 and the ongoing efforts of the Kannada Development Authority, the CM said that as long as he remains in power, he will make sure that Kannada is respected and not diminished.
Siddaramaiah stressed the importance of maintaining a deep affection for one’s mother tongue, even while learning other languages. He pointed out that Kannada has been designated a classical language and called for collective efforts to elevate its status.
Additionally, he warned against the use of derogatory language toward Kannada, mentioning a concerning trend on social media. He asserted that strict actions would be taken against anyone disrespecting the language and culture of Karnataka.
