As per the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department, the Northwest India will continue to battle heat waves to severe heat waves over the next four to five days. Heat waves are also expected in the Western Himalayan Region, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, the severe Cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ made a landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh, casuing heavy rainfall in several regions around.
IMD’s warning for Heatwave
The Met office has extended red alerts for West Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Haryana. It has advised that vulnerable people need to take utmost care. From May 27–28, most of Rajasthan, a few areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and some areas of West Uttar Pradesh are predicted to experience heat waves to severe heat waves, with a gradual decline later. Heatwave conditions are also likely in isolated areas of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh from May 27-30; Chhattisgarh from May 28-30; West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha from May 27-29; and Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat on May 27.
Cyclone Remal latest updates
Cyclone Remal made landfall in the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh and was followed by heavy rain and gusty winds in the regions nearby. The cyclone tore through Bangladesh and Bengal with winds with speeds of 135 kilometres per hour, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property. The severe cyclonic storm has now weakened into a cyclonic storm and is expected to weaken further, as per the IMD.
In the wake of the cyclone, many people were left without power and one man was killed in Kolkata after concrete fell on him during the peak of the storm.
Heavy Rainfall Prediction
In most of West Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is predicted on May 27. On May 27–28, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal is expected to get mild to moderate rainfall, with isolated places possibly seeing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The Northeastern States will see light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura on May 27 to May 28. Isolated hefty rainfall is also likely to occur in Assam and Meghalaya on May 27-28, Arunachal Pradesh on May 28, and Mizoram and Tripura on May 27.
