The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday (December 5) reported that Cyclone Michaung had diminished into a deep depression over central coastal Andhra Pradesh. “Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” weakened into a Deep Depression over Central Coastal AP. About 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 km southeast of Khammam. To weaken further into a Depression in next 06 hours and further into a WML during subsequent 06 hours,” said IMD on social media platform X.
The cyclonic storm reached the land on Tuesday afternoon, making landfall near Bapatla between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Its most intense impact was experienced on Monday in Chennai and the surrounding areas of Tamil Nadu.
Following its landfall on Tuesday, Chennai experienced continuous rainfall, although the intensity had considerably diminished compared to Monday. The relentless rains and ensuing flooding caused by the storm paralyzed the state capital, leading to disruptions in daily life, loss of life, and property damage. Heavy rainfall is likely in Telangana, and isolated heavy rainfall over south Chhattisgarh, and adjoining south Odisha today.
As per the latest IMD forecast, there is a high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with some areas experiencing extremely heavy rain, in Mulugu, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, and Khammam districts of Telangana on December 6. Additionally, the meteorological office predicts heavy to very heavy rain in isolated locations across several districts, including Suryapet, Mahabubabad, and Warangal, during the same timeframe.

- Coastal Andhra Pradesh: The region faced exceptionally heavy rainfall is likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6.
- Telangana: Isolated heavy rainfall at most places is likely on December 6.
- Odisha: Isolated heavy rainfall over south Coastal and adjoining south Interior Odisha on December 6.
- Chhattisgarh: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall over south Chhattisgarh on December 5-7.
- Vidarbha: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall at isolated places on December 6.
Rainfall likely in parts of Chhattisgarh
Raipur city, Durg, Bilaspur, Bastar and other parts of Chhattisgarh received light rain due to cyclone Michaung, bringing down the temperature, the Met department said. “Chhattisgarh is likely to receive light or moderate rainfall in several parts on Wednesday. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied with strong winds are likely to occur in few places,” the Met Department said.
