The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast has predicted further dip in temperatures in certain regions. A western disturbance is expected to bring rain and snowfall to parts of northwest India later in the week. Meanwhile, cold wave conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh over the next few days.
IMD issues yellow warning for coldwave for parts of Himachal
The Shimla meteorological station issued a yellow warning for cold wave conditions, ground frost, and dense fog in Himachal Pradesh’s Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Mandi districts for Wednesday and Thursday, with dense fog anticipated on Friday. Una experienced a severe cold wave on Tuesday night, with the minimum temperature near freezing at 1.2 degrees Celsius, while Tabo in Lahaul and Spiti recorded the coldest temperature at -13.6 degrees Celsius.
Cold wave conditions and fog were observed in various districts, though Una recorded the highest daytime temperature at 23 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact Northwest India starting January 11, bringing rain and snow to isolated areas on Saturday and Sunday. The weather is expected to remain mostly dry until Friday, except for possible snowfall in Lahaul, Spiti, and Kinnaur. Snowfall is also likely in the mid and high hills over the weekend.
Delhi weather forecast
Delhi experienced a sunny afternoon after a cold and foggy morning on Wednesday. The minimum temperature dropped to 7.4 degree Celsius, but the maximum temperature rose to 21.5 degree Celsius, offering some respite from the chill.
Temperature drops in northern states
In the Kashmir Valley, night temperatures dropped below freezing, with Gulmarg recording the lowest at -9.8 degree Celsius. Srinagar saw a minimum temperature of -1 degree Celsius, while Pahalgam recorded -8.2 degree Celsius. The IMD forecasts a dry spell over the coming days, with isolated snow or rain possible on Saturday.
Rajasthan also faced biting cold, with Fatehpur in Sikar district recording the state’s lowest at 1.1 degree Celsius. Other regions, including Nagaur (1.7 degree Celsius), Sirohi (2.7 degree Celsius), and Jalore (2.9 degree Celsius), also experienced severe cold. The weather is expected to remain dry, with a drop of 2-4 degree Celsius in temperatures over the next few days.
In Punjab and Haryana, dense fog reduced visibility to zero in Amritsar, while Sangrur recorded the coldest temperature in Punjab at 3 degree Celsius. Chandigarh recorded a low of 8.3 degree Celsius, with dense fog in the morning reducing visibility to 80 meters.
