In a move to further the India-Canada bilateral ties, the foreign minister of the two countries held a delegation level talks in New Delhi, discussing on a range of issues including trade, economy and civil nuclear…. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar asserted that the two sides are working closely to “restore” their ties, as well as to lessen the risk from international economy by “forging strong partnerships of growing range and depth”.
Noting that as the foreign ministers, the two leaders have the responsibility to shepherd the process of rebuilding their cooperation, the EAM said they must also “ensure that it(partnership) delivers on the expectations of our PMs and the interests of our people.”

“It means not only taking initiatives in our particular jurisdiction but to monitor and integrate interactions across the entire breadth of the government. I look forward to doing so, working closely with you…We (India-Canada) seek to de-risk the international economy today by forging strong partnerships of growing range and depth…” he added.
Restoring India-Canada ties
The foreign minister said that India looks at Canada as a “complementary economy, we see another open society, we see diversity and pluralism and we believe that it is the basis for a close, sustainable and long-term cooperative framework”. He mentioned the meeting comes as a continued dialogue the PMs of the two countries had on May 26, 2025.
“India-Canada bilateral relations have been steadily progressing in the last 2 months. We are working to restore and reinvigorate the mechanisms necessary to advance our partnership,” he said.

Jaishankar said the two sides have prepared an “ambitious roadmap” to advance their mutual cooperation in various domains, including trade, investment, agriculture, science and technology, civil nuclear collaboration, AI, critical minerals and energy. “I am glad that the two High Commissioners have assumed their responsibilities in our respective capitals and are part of today’s meetings…” he added.
Canadian FM’s ‘namaste’ greeting to India
Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand greeted the people and expressed gratitude for the development of India, Canada ties. Mentioning about the previous dialogues New Delhi and Ottawa had on the levels of FMs, NSAs and PMs, Anita said, “… Today, we’ll be discussing the India-Canada Joint Statement, which is comprehensive and covers a number of issues that will allow us to continue the work to elevate the bilateral relationship.”

“I appreciate the words you spoke relating to the security dialogue, which, while we elevate the relationship in areas of critical minerals, energy, AI, and climate, to name a few, will continue. The meeting that our officials had relating to security and law enforcement just a few weeks ago here was very productive, and that dialogue will continue. Both of our governments agree on the importance of those dialogues,” she added.

The Canadian minister stressed that the two governments have agreed to elevate the relationship further. “The joint statement will outline our mutual plans for re-engagement. This will inform both Canadians and Indians alike that we are collectively committed to advancing this relationship now and in the long term, particularly regarding our mutual priorities in the Indo-Pacific,” she said.
