Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and candidate from Delhi’s Rithala constituency, Mohinder Goyal, was attacked during an election rally, causing him to lose consciousness, the Delhi Police reported on Saturday. He is currently receiving treatment at Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack. In a post on X, he wrote, “People of Delhi, think about it—if they are resorting to violence now, what will happen if they come to power? They will turn Delhi into a stronghold of hooliganism.”

The Delhi Police received a PCR call at around 11:15 AM and rushed to the scene. Officials confirmed, “We received a report that AAP MLA Mohinder Goyal had been assaulted and had fallen unconscious.”

Arvind Kejriwal condemns attack

AAP convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal strongly condemned the attack, blaming the BJP for resorting to violence out of frustration. He posted on X, “BJP is losing elections badly in Delhi—out of desperation, they have now turned to violence. We strongly condemn the attack on our MLA Mohinder Goyal from Rithala.”

Who is Mohinder Goyal?

Mohinder Goyal is contesting the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections on February 5 against BJP’s Kulwant Rana and Congress’ Sushant Mishra. He has served as the MLA from Rithala since 2015.

Rithala is one of Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies, located in the North West Delhi district.

Earlier, the Delhi Police had issued a notice to Goyal and his office staff in connection with an investigation into fake Aadhaar cards, allegedly involving Bangladeshi nationals. Goyal dismissed the accusations as “politically motivated.”

The Delhi Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8.
