Massive traffic disruptions halted Delhi on Thursday as Yamuna floodwater led to severe waterlogging across parts of the city. The flooding led police to shut several key junctions of the Ring Road between ITO and Civil Lines. Many commuters were stranded for three to four hours on the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and other arterial routes in north and central parts of the capital.

Kashmere Gate flooded with Yamuna water

Amid the traffic disruptions and waterlogging issues, drone visuals showed the Kashmere Gate bus terminal completely inundated. The terminal, one of Delhi’s busiest transit hubs, connects passengers from several neighbouring states and is surrounded by markets and heavy traffic at most hours.

The sudden inundation during the morning rush hour brought vehicular movement to a crawl on stretches including Kashmere Gate, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and Kalindi Kunj. Many commuters took to social media to highlight their ordeal, with some saying that even two-kilometre stretches were taking hours to cross. The heavy rains also forced many commuters to opt for the Delhi Metro to reach their destinations on time.

Traffic diversions in place

Traffic police officials confirmed that multiple stretches near the Yamuna were submerged, forcing diversions and triggering bottlenecks. “Traffic jams were witnessed at Kashmere Gate, along the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road and around Kalindi Kunj where floodwater accumulated on carriageways. Diversions had to be made to regulate movement,” an official told PTI.

In a public advisory, Delhi Traffic Police urged commuters travelling from Chandgi Ram Akhara towards Rajghat to opt for alternate routes, as efforts continued to restore normal flow amid rising water levels.
