Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lauded the successful mission that led to the rescue of 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district.

The Prime Minister conveyed his appreciation for the collaborative rescue exercise, calling the mission as an “amazing example of humanity and teamwork.”

Speaking to rescued construction workers over the phone, Modi extended his best wishes for their well-being and health, officials said.

He said that the multi-agency rescue exercise has made everyone emotional.

Soon after the workers were brought out, PM Modi, in a post on X, saluted the spirit and patience exhibited by those involved in the operation and said that their courage had provided a new lease of life to the 41 labourers.

“It is a matter of great satisfaction that these friends of ours will meet their dear ones after a long wait,” said PM Modi, highlighting the commendable patience and bravery displayed by the family members of the trapped workers.

Uttarkashi tunnel collapse

After 17 days, rescue officials were able to get out 41 labourers who were trapped after a portion of the under-construction Silkyara road tunnel, located in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, collapsed due to a landslide on November 12.

The collaborative rescue exercise involved the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army, and local volunteers.

The rescue operation started immediately on November 12, ensuring the safety of all trapped construction workers. Basic necessities such as oxygen, food, and water were promptly provided during the rescue efforts.
